Project 9D : Conference and Xzbit, 0900-1630, 25nd October 2010

I have to tie the posters given before the exhibition started.
First poster.
My friends are helping me to tie the mask, A2 poster and sarong since many of them bring on Monday. Sorry to say that I do not have their picture. After that I receive a message which say that I have to prepare table for food. I do not know what to do cause all the table already arrange nicely and at the same time I have to manage the food. Luckily I have extra table beside the window and I borrow table from Architecture Studio 200. Finally food is arrived and at the same time our important guest is arrived too, Ar Najib was trying to block them but I think not working because only around 40% food arrived.

After eating, cleaning process is going on.
Finally, my work is done. Thank you for those who helping me. Although I am not satisfied with my work but I do my best. It is a process to learn.

Project 9D : Conference, 0900-1200, 22nd October 2010

'Stewardship' is discussed in the class. Stewardship used in a more general way to refer to a responsibility to take care of something owned by someone else. In 70's,"the conservation movement" slowly began to associate the environment with responsible use. Nowadays, the word has change to "sustainable". After the class finish, I realized that
Intention : We have to be responsibly to save our earth since the 'wisest man' creates things that bring convenience to human being but damaging our earth
Act : Any ways that change shift the human current soul, such as education, religion, believe and et al
Product : Sustainable earth to future
People : Everyone are responsible to maintain and reserve our earth to future generation

We are given a briefing about the event held on the next Monday, Exhibition. I was given a job to order food and arrange the studio. I have made a shift which 3 groups of people will work for studio in the time given. The first group is working on 3pm, 22/10/2010 which the second and third group work on 9am and 3pm respectively on the following day. The first group of people is cleaning the studio while I am redo my bamboo strut.
After transferring bamboo for the first day.
Tire but enjoy
New bamboo site

Searching for my lost connector

Redo the bamboo

This time cannot be too thin

Another strut going to finish
We heat the end of the connector the hit it with the wood hammer

Checking the stability of connector
Checking the quality of the friends' work
Changing shift. I am take over their job.
Bamboo
Tire but finally finish the strut
On the next day, I was appeared myself in studio about 4pm because I have basketball match on that day. I was going to studio immediately after the match is finished. Luckily the duty stuffs have finish the work that I given to them. I was thinking how to decorate the studio and yet my friend suggests to build a big tensegrity.
3-strut tensegrity
After that, I was built a simple shelf to hang the mask while my friends are going to screw their bamboo strut since we finish too late yesterday. And yet i do not have any picture regrading on built the shelf cause i do not have camera. Mr Rusli suggested to arrange globe to a curve line and Ar Najib suggested that the small dome hang on the ceiling.

Discussion with Mr WanB
On the next day, I reach studio about 9am. I meet Mr WanB and he suggested that globe should arrange with the principle of golden section. And the chairs should not be put at the original place.

Building another shelf cause I think not enough
to put all the mask that receive in a shelf.

Putting the chair under the table
Building a cube tensegrity

We back about 12am after finishing all the work in studio. From the weekend, I discovered many things

Intention : We should unite to get the most efficiency outcome
Act : We do things together and DO is taking over TALK
Place : Design Studio 101
Product : The work in the studio
People : Those who gave their generous help to me
Principle : Cooperation between human, no race, no sex, no argument.
Place : Design Studio 101

Project 7C : Tensegrity, 0900-1200, 18th October 2010

First of all, we are expose to a topic, Road Accident, which often listen since primary school. From the information given by lecturer, traffic accident in Malaysia is on the increasing rate about 9.7% per annum over last 3 decades. According to him, the main reason is human error which consists of 57%, follow by environmental factors and mechanical fault which took about 4.7% and 2.4% respectively. We need to do something to reduce the accident rate. Some action we can do, likes changing the design of road geometry, common structure on the road, safety barrier, conditions of road surface and driving skills. There are somethings that not under human control that is weather condition, so driver should change their driving attitude and drive more carefully on the road in order to lower the rate of accident.
Intention : Reduce the accident in our country
Act : One of the way is through education, educate people to appreciate their life since young, life is valuable if we make use of it
Product : If all the money system and selfishness is gone, a peaceful and harmony world should began (who are willing to scarify? )
People : For those who are valuing their life and appreciate what they have been given
Principle : Road regulation and universal law which means is better to walk if possible
Place : On our country

After that, 'Bottom Billion' is given after the talk. When the topic is shown on the screen, my mind have recall an interesting movie, 'Slumdunk Milliner', which have touch my heart when i watch it. From the statistic given, population on our earth is 6.875 billion which can be divided into ratio
1:5:1 = rich man : rapidly development : bottom billion
I can divided the problem of Bottom Billion into 2 parts which are from the view of states and people. From the view of states, we can know that Bottom Billion countries often have a conflict history, weak governance resulted in limited government ability to disburse aid efficiently, landlocked with bad neighbors, suppression of human rights and marginalization of particular ethnic group.  Bottom Billion live in no money, stuck in absolute poverty, no education, live in trap of disease such as parasite and dengue, effect of neglected tropical diseases and issues of  'Fragile States'.
Intention : To appreciation what students' own today
Act : Through education which is presented in the class in power point form
Product : Soul shift
People : RUS 101 students
Principle : Fact and picture that show in the class which can give rough idea about the condition of Bottom Billion country
Place : Every way which can positive our thinking

We are expose to Tensegrity System onward, this system is one of the system that we need to apply when build BIG dome. From the suggestion of Mr Rusli, we have to produce a model with the simplest structure which is consists of only 3 struts as shown in below.
Depression view.

Elevation view.

Top view.
Finally I have discovered that
Intention : To build model of 3-strut tensegrity and learn about it
Act : Cut the bamboo stick which is left when doing the RAG-132 geodesic dome
Product : As shown in picture above
People : I am doing the small model
Principle : From the information given by Mr WanB
Place : In my room (L12-019, Indah Kembara)

Project 7B : Scaffold and Gangplank, 0900-1200, 15th October 2010

A topic concern on 'Personal Survival' is given in the lecture. From what i gain, personal survival is someone continue to live or exist on the earth. We should be prepared with any disaster to survive, we need survival kit, survival civilization to unite all the people who are willing to exist on the earth.

After the class, assignment 7B is given. The instruction given is to check the RUS 101 website so that when we get the permission from the university authority to bring the bamboo from old site to HBP site.

Big Dome Assembly, 1600-1800, 11st October 2010

Finally the BIG Dome can be built.

Our dome site and the first layer of dome
Before we join the first layer we find our own bamboo and divide it according to section
Today conclusion is that we are not able to build it cause of some broken bamboo and the  end of bamboo become narrower which cause the connector fall easily.

Project 9 : A. Abstract, B. Paper, C. Poster, 0900-1200, 8th October 2010

An interesting talk regrading to 'Tasawwur Melayu' is given in the class. We are told to understand the language before understand the culture. From the Malay World view, they talk about one humanity on year 1969. From sejarah Melayu, malay are originated from Sri Wijaya (orang Jawi). But some of the people believe that malay are came from Yunan Province, South China. Every races have their own culture as well as malay. Malay has its uniqueness of their culture, its show how Malay life and the activity that malay ancient did such as gotong royong.

After that we are given project 9 which we need to pass up the part A on the monday. Our group consists of Nelson Wong, Loh Jin Bok, Chin Wei Rong, Yvonne Lai and me. The topic is given about mind shift and spread the factual info to the world.

Project 9A : Soul Shift

As global population and affluence has increased, so has the use of various materials increased in volume, diversity and distance transported. Included here are raw materials in construction. Sustainable use of materials has targeted the idea of dematerialization, converting the linear path of materials to a circular material flow that reuses materials as much as possible, much like the cycling and reuse of waste in nature. Quantity Surveyor has the responsibility to recommend to use the suitable materials which in other words that Quantity Surveyor has also the responsibility to the environment.

All the Quantity Surveyor should be unite and hold on the concept of green construction. Green construction is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-effcient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.

Project 9B : 1500 words

Introduction
Construction industry is one of the most booming industries in the whole world. From the prospect of architecture, construction is commonly or simply known as a monumental process which ranges from building, assembling and alteration to the demolition of infrastructure. The scale of construction industry is usually large and it involves a complex interaction among different actors with various objectives and roles.
To ensure the execution of a successful project, rigorous yet effective planning is needed and one of the most important processes is to determine the cost or the budget of a particular project. When it comes to money, most people will immediately think of quantity surveyors. Well, what do they know about quantity surveyors? How much understanding do they have for the role of a quantity surveyor?
As far as I know, most people tend to relate money with quantity surveyors especially in the construction industry as quantity surveyors are widely known as the actors which will manage all the cost relating to building and civil engineering projects. So, is this the only role played by a quantity surveyor or are there more? Of course there are more, and now we are going to spread the factual information related with the role of quantity surveyors to the world.

What to spread?
There are several things that we can spread to the world. For examples, the works of quantity surveyor, sustainability and also cost (construction cost). A quantity surveyor’s job is not only majored in cutting down the cost, it depends on which area they worked. Many people don’t know how their houses or apartment’s price was count, so they need to know basic costs that were considered into the price.

Sustainability
As global population and affluence has increased, the use of various materials also increased in volume. Included here are raw materials in construction. Nowadays, our environment becomes more and more polluted. Hence, green construction was introduced. Green construction is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.
Quantity Surveyor has the responsibility to recommend the use the suitable materials especially green building materials such as bamboo in construction. Green building materials are composed of renewable, rather than non renewable resources. Green materials are environmentally friendly because the impacts are considered over the life of the product (low maintenance). Sustainable use of materials has targeted the idea of dematerialization, converting the linear path of materials to a circular material flow that reuses materials as much as possible.
All the Quantity Surveyors should unite and hold on the concept of green construction. Green building is not only eco-friendly but it also reduced maintenance costs over the life of the building.

Employment Opportunities
There are usually two major types of employers for quantity surveyors which is Consultant Quantity Surveyor and Contractor’s Quantity Surveyor.
Consultant Quantity Surveyor traditionally referred to as a Professional Quantity Surveyor or Private Practice Quantity Surveyor. They are broadly concerned with contracts and costs on construction projects. The methods employed, however, cover a range of activities which may include cost planning, value management, feasibility study, cost benefit analysis, lifecycle costing, tendering, valuation, change control, dispute resolution and cost estimation. Quantity surveyors control construction costs by accurate measurement of the work required.
However, the role of a contractors QS will extend further than the day to day running of building projects and will cover such other areas as sub-contract formation, forecasting of costs and values of the project, cash flow forecasts and the collation of the operation and maintenance manuals of the project.

MANUFACTURING COSTS
Manufacturing is a process of converting raw materials into finished goods through the use of labour service and other facilities in factories. In a manufacturing company, manufacturing costs will include material, labour and factory overheads, while non-manufacturing costs will include distribution and administration expenses. Quantity surveyors need to know all this.
MATERIALS COST.
Materials are physical commodities/raw materials that enter into the making of a product.
LABOUR COST
Labour is also classified as direct and indirect like material. Direct labour directly involved in converting raw materials into finished goods, for example, factory worker. Indirect labour is required to perform manufacturing activities generally, but is not directly involved in the conversion of raw materials into finished goods. For examples, foreman and clerk.
FACTORY OVERHEADS
Factory overhead including all indirect manufacturing costs which cannot be identified with specific units of finished products.
COST OF PRODUCTION
Cost of production is the supply of a commodity.
PRODUCTION COST
Production costs refer to the total amount of money spent in the production of goods.
SELLING COSTS
Selling costs are the costs of marketing, advertisement and salesmanship. These costs are incurred to attract customers.

All developers should just take 10% of benefits from all the costs mentioned above. We should not be greedy and only put profit as 1st priority and neglected the environment. By telling all these costs to the people, then developer have no choice but to be care in determining the price of the buildings.

Why we need to spread?
As a first year QS student, we think the professional QS should spread the real fact to the world. The main reason is the status-quo for the building construction is not sustainable; one of the ways to overcome it is to educate the students as what my lecturer did for this moment. In our opinion, we think the 7 elements of APEX should be recognised to the whole world. ‘Sustainable’ is one of the element of APEX and it makes a better life and conserve the beauty of the earth to our next regeneration, which is the main element of APEX, ‘Future’.
As far as we concern, sun will emit high radiation on the coming 2012 and the whole galaxy will experience the global warming, but from the point of view of QS, one of the things we can do is try to change those unsustainable to sustainable on current construction which means we can try to use more sustainable material like bamboo, salvaged, refurbished, remanufactured and et al.
Another important element is ‘Sacrifice’. QSs are generally talking about money, but the fact is not all of the QS did it. Regarding to ‘sacrifice’, we are trying hard to shift our mind, for us to survive on 2012 disaster; we need to sacrifice which mean the wealth and power system in our world is an unsustainable system. We need to unite.
From our opinion, QS should not work for money; QS should work for the world, ‘sustainable’. As to face 2012 disaster, whole the QS over the world should unite, we cannot decide the conclusion before we did, maybe after unite we cannot make any changes to the earth but at least we change the soul of all QS.
The conclusion is the intention to save the earth and for instant our action is to spread the factual information about what we know to the world. For future, our aim is to unite the soul of QS so that sustainable is achieved. The product should be the sustainable and comfort of nature of the earth.

Ways to Spread
There are several ways to spread the facts. One of the effective ways is through the organisations such as ISM (Institute Surveyor of Malaysia) and RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors). From these organisations we can find extensive information through their free guides to a range of property problems and issues. Besides that, we can search theirs database of members to enable us to find a surveyor offering the services that we required, in our area. Besides, talks and conferences often been held to let everyone, especially the professionals like the architects and engineers to know about the latest information.
They need to know more sustainable materials such as bamboo. BIG (Bamboo Interest Group) is one of the effective organisation to let the world know about the beauty of bamboo. It’s a very strong material which is durable. Bamboo has many uses – not only on building materials but also the component of buildings such as doors.
Simultaneously, road shows also can be held in shopping complexes to educate customers about the new construction materials. Therefore, the customers will be able to gain more knowledge to about this matter and know what materials can be use and what is no longer sustainable.
Moreover, competition among quantity surveyors by encouraging deserving candidates to register and open firms will ensure that members aspire for newer technology to remain relevant or competitive on the construction market.

Discussion : APEX Leap to 2012, 4th October 2010, 0900-1200

A long talk was given by Mr WanB about 'APEX Leap to 2012'. Some of the information can get from www.hbp.usm.my/1b/buluh. From the talk given, we can see that Mr WanB is put his effort on BIG group.

Initially, 3P which consists of people, place and money, were model for BIG. But after some events on 2008, BIG group discover that they are lack of money, then they decide to exchange money with principle. The principle is inter-related to APEX- ACCELERATED which can bring us to excellent. Before that transformation is needed because our status-quo is not an option to APEX.

Other that APEX, there are some other things to be considerate for 2012 disaster. For example, ideology, politics, economy, social system, culture, education, military and law. There are elements focus by BIG group.

Here come Q&S section.
1. How can we get so much bamboo in Malaysia? And how was the plantation of bamboo?
For Mr WanB, there are 10% of bamboo from the Malaysia jungle which can be used in 2012. Many bamboo are wasted when the logging activity happen and the bamboo in Malaysia is grow according to life-joint which mean old clump of bamboo life inside and new bamboo grow surround the old one. From my information, Mr WanB said bamboo in Indonesia are grew individually and that is the best bamboo if we can plant it and we do not did it because we have no time if we are now prepare for 2012.

2. How do bamboo inter-related to APEX vision?
We should make changes for our status-quo and create new things. There are 7 elements in the APEX program, bamboo has fulfill the first 6 elements which shown in the website above. The only element that bamboo cannot fit is sacrificed, anyone who interested to survive on 2012 should make sacrifice and unite together. One of the scarification is leave the current system which will never make change in human life if people still taking wealth as the important element in their life.

3. Is it the dome we did only for flood? What can we do with our dome if other than flood happen on 2012?
Since we are just first year students, something that is difficult should not be take into consideration. 'Sediakan payung sebelum hujan', we are prepared for 2012, we do not know what will be happen on 2012 but even flood not coming we still can use our dome.

4. What is the lifespan of bamboo? Is it any preservative for bamboo?
BIG do not have the answer. We are constructing the dome and not a researcher so we need to read and get more information from those who did research.

5. Can bamboo play its role in medical field?
From USM invention, bamboo can cure 'gila babi'. More research is available in the medical field.

Intention : From the first class we talking about APEX and leap to 2012
Action : BIG group are trying effort to drive toward APEX
Product : 132 Dome (PONDOK) , 101 Dome (IBU) , BIG Group , Anyone interested in BIG
People : Mr WanB (VIP) , all RUS 101 lecturers , all RUS 101 students
Principle : 3P , 7 elements of APEX
Place : Anywhere and everywhere

Project 8A : BIG Dome assembly, 1st October 2010, 0900-1200

I am not able to attend the class because I join the program 1Malaysia : Projek Jelajah which mean we cycle from Seberang Jaya to SMK Sungai Acheh.

After I back from the activity, I ask my friend immediately about what lecture have thought in the class. First of all we need to reach the BIG blog and think question that need to ask on the talk of Lompatan APEX ke 2012.After that we need to arrange the bamboo struts randomly to assemble to VIP of the talk.

We arrange our bamboo according to part A, B, C, D and E.

We join the bamboo struct randomly.

Almost finish the model
Intention : Creating a random model with our section's bamboo
Action : Join as many bamboo as possible with bolts and nuts
Product : We create a roof for 1st time after that we change to build a bridge
People : All section 5 members
Principle : Randomly - No specific rule and regulation
Place : Land beside E48B

Project 7 : IBU Construction (Part 2), 0900-1200, 27th September 2010

This time I need to fix the PVC connector into the bamboo end. Since one of my bamboo strut is too thin and its diameter is slightly bigger than the connector, so the only way to overcome this problem is to get a new bamboo because if connector is heated at the one end, the connector will become very thin after fix into the bamboo.

This time i bring along connector to bamboo site

All the bamboo seem cannot fit the connector

All bamboo have become very messy

Hard to find a nice bamboo a..........

Producing the connector .
Make the line that will save the time of Pakcik who help us to cut the curve line.
From this project, I have gained
Intention : To build BIG doom
Action : Trying hard to find suitable bamboo and fix the connectors into the bamboo end
Product : Bamboo struct with length 220.7cm from the both bolt hole of connectors
People : BIG member
Principle : Order, rules and instruction from Mr WanB and the pakcik who help us to cut the curve line of connector
Place : Site where we put the bamboo and Dataran Merah which is near bengkel
